Our Firm History

Blackburn, Childers & Steagall, PLC (BCS) has been a trusted name in accounting and professional services for over 60 years. Established in 1961, the firm began when Carl Childers, Jr., and Joe A. Blackburn, Jr., merged their individual Johnson City practices to create Blackburn and Childers. Charles Steagall joined in 1966 while attending East Tennessee State University (ETSU) and became a partner in 1970, giving the firm its current name.

Through decades of growth, BCS has built a legacy of leadership and innovation. With a team of over 100 professionals across locations in Johnson City, Kingsport, Greeneville, and Boone, NC, the firm continues to be a financial advisory cornerstone for the communities it serves.

1961

The firm was founded in Johnson City by Joe Blackburn and Carl Childers.

1970

Charles Steagall is made partner. The firm officially becomes Blackburn, Childers & Steagall.

1998

BCS opens BCS Wealth Management firm.

2001

Acquired Greeneville, Tennessee office.

2002

Kingsport, Tennessee office opens.

2004

Acquired CPA Associates.

2007

Merger with Hoover Harrison and Associates.

2011

BCS opens Trinity Valuation Consulting Group and First Covenant Trust & Advisors.

2014

Merger with Paul Rhoten.

2016

Merger with Eddy & Eddy.

2018

Merger with Shorter, Carden, Mitchell & Gray.

2020

Merger with Bryce Holder. Opened Boone, NC office.

2023

Boone, NC new office ribbon cutting.
