SCAMS INCREASE DURING TAX SEASON

The IRS reports the number of scam-related phone calls increases during tax season. If you receive a phone call demanding payment for delinquent taxes, hang up the phone immediately and report the phone number to phishing@irs.gov. Similarly, you could receive an email, text or social media message from a scammer claiming to be the IRS. Scammers have also been known to send letters and IRS notices. If you receive such a notice in the mail, please bring the letter to us, and we can determine if it is fake or real.

Since the elderly are most susceptible to these scams, remind your loved ones to hang up if they receive a phone call demanding payment.

These scams take many forms. Read more about current tax scams and how to know if it’s really the IRS on the IRS website.
