You can visit the IRS website at the Where’s My Refund link or download the IRS2Go phone app. Both are available 24 hours a day.
When Can I Check on My Refund?
You can check on your refund 24 hours after your return has been electronically filed or 4 weeks after you have mailed your paper return.
How Do I Use the Where’s My Refund Tool?
From the information on your tax return, you will need to input your social security number, filing status and the exact whole dollar amount of your refund.
What Will It Tell Me?
You will see a tracker that has 3 stages: 1. Return Received 2. Return Approved and 3. Refund Sent. You will see a personalized refund date as soon as your return has been processed and approved. You only need to check the website once a day, because the IRS only updates the site once per day, usually at night.
What About An Amended Return?
The IRS created a separate tool to check the status of an amended return. You can check the status of certain amended returns by visiting the Where’s My Amended Return page.

Most refunds are being issued in 21 days, however, it is possible your return may require additional review and take longer. Don’t depend on receiving your refund by a certain date.
